چکیده

Theory of coherence and polarization in stationary random electromagnetic fields is reviewed. Degree of coherence for electromagnetic fields is examined in the space–time domain and the conditions for complete coherence are discussed. The space–time domain correlation matrix is then transformed to the corresponding space–frequency domain quantity, the cross-spectral density matrix, which is then employed in defining the degree of spectral coherence and the coherent-mode representation for partially coherent electromagnetic fields. Theory is then employed in the coherence study of laser resonators. Relations between the degree of polarization and the degree of coherence is briefly discussed.

Connection between electric and magnetic coherence in free electromagnetic fields.

We introduce quantitative measures for the description of the electric and magnetic coherence in a stationary, random electromagnetic field at two points, in a volume, and in the Fourier space. These quantities are applied to free electromagnetic fields, and several theorems regarding the relationship between the two types of coherences in such fields are established. Fields which are statistic...

Optical Measurements: Polarization and Coherence of Light Fields

The Chapter is devoted to consideration of metrological aspects of intrinsically interconnected characteristics of light fields, such as intensity, polarization and coherence. Conceptually, all these quantities are derived from the Wolf’s coherency matrix [1]. However, new insight on interconnection of them is provided by the novel singular-optical approach [2, 3] predicting existence of import...

Observations by the RHESSI satellite of large polarization of the prompt γ-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Burst GRB0212206 (Coburn & Boggs 2003) imply that the magnetic field coherence scale is larger than the size of the visible emitting region, ∼ R/Γ, where R is the radius of the flow, Γ is the associated Lorentz factor. Such fields cannot be generated in a causally disconnected, hydrodynami...

Polarimetric description of superposing random electromagnetic fields with different spectral composition.

We present a polarimetric technique that provides a complete description of a mixture of uncorrelated optical fields with different spectral and polarization properties. The second-order coherence theory is used to describe the superposition of two random optical fields, and an imaging experiment is reported that illustrates the capability to separate radiations with different spectral composit...

Degree of polarization in near fields of thermal sources: effects of surface waves.

We introduce the concept of degree of polarization for electromagnetic near fields. The approach is based on the generalized Stokes parameters that appear as expansion coefficients of the 3 x 3 coherence matrix in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices. The formalism is applied to optical near fields of thermally fluctuating half-space sources with particular interest in fields that are strongly polar...
